Managing Mental Health in the Workplace
Are there Mental Health issues within your workplace?
There is a high chance the answer is "yes". Statistics say that 1 in 4 people suffer from mental health issues in their lifetime. 9 million working days are lost in the UK, due to mental health issues, which equates to a cost of £26 billion (source: Sainsbury’s Centre for Mental Health).
Case Study: Westminster Mind
Westminster MIND partnered with Yes And to produce a ½ day training session addressing the issue of Mental Health at work and aiming to facilitate the successful employment of more people with a history of mental illness as well as to help develop healthier workplaces for everyone.
The play covered conditions such as depression, OCD, bipolar and simple stress. This was piloted over 4 days to a variety of senior people from different organizations. The result was universally favourable. 91% of those attending felt the sessions met their expectations and 83% said they enjoyed the method of training.
Yes And’s 1-day training programme uses Interactive Theatre and training techniques in order to:
- help people deal with mental health issues effectively and compassionately
- encourage people to take personal responsibility for their own mental and emotional well-being
- break the taboos about mental health
- give people practical techniques for dealing with highly charged situations
Actors used in Yes And’s mental health programmes have thoroughly researched the issues and have some personal experience, professionally or through their personal circles.
The 3 hour Mental Health session looks like this:
Introductions - we set out the aims of the day and how we will go about achieving them
The Play - we show the play, which illustrates the key issues gleaned from the research period
InterAct - we start the play again from the beginning, with audience participation to help solve the problems
Interval
The Play & InterAct for a 2nd key issue
The Play & InterAct for a 3rd key issue
Locking and Closing - we re-assess Mental Health guiding principles in the light of the experience and determine ongoing goals
Additional Training - with slightly more time, a training session can be added giving tools and techniques to help people reduce their own levels of stress etc and to impact positively on those around them.
